Keys to Progressing Care of the ICU Patient : Bed Rest - A thing of the past

  Contact Hours : 8 Hours

Course Description

This 8 hour webinar emphasizes key considerations applicable to the rehabilitation professional in effectively managing patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Time will be spent looking at the evidence for rehabilitation in the ICU as well as understanding the ICU environment. This includes management of various lines and equipment, ventilators and other devices commonly seen within the ICU setting. The course further accentuates an evidence-based approach in managing patients with deep vein thromboses, and helps the practitioner understand the clinical relevance of telemetry and electrocardiograms. The course will attempt to disseminate 'unstable' from 'stable-unstable' labels and emphasize the response-dependent approach to managing these patients. Evaluation strategies, organized clinical decision making and effective treatment techniques will be emphasized. Clinicians are challenged to integrate and synthesize physiological and clinical principles in decision making through the use of various clinical case studies.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the normal anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system as it applies to physical therapy patient management
  • Provide evidence-based rationale for the presence of rehabilitation in the ICU
  • Provide evidence for the safety and efficacy of therapy treatments with the critically ill patient
  • Describe contraindication and therapy implications for various equipment and lines mostencountered in the ICU
  • Identify common atrial and ventricular rhythms and understand the implications to consider within the constraints of time within any given treatment session
  • Identify changes to a patient's telemetry rhythm or ECG that would warrant a modification of treatment, before or during a treatment session
  • Have knowledge of ventilator settings and the implications for the physical and occupational therapist
  • Identify classes of patients who would best benefit from use of the tilt table
  • Provide evidence-based rationale for continued treatment of the patient diagnosed with DVT
  • Identify the side effects of common medication use in the ICU
  • Identify the difference and potency of various medications given intravenously or centrally within the ICU
