Course Description

Therapists are faced with a unique challenge when exercising patients with heart failure. Several patients have multi system involvement, take multiple medications and are severely deconditioned. This course emphasizes key considerations applicable to the physical and occupational therapist in effectively managing patients with heart failure. The disease processes will be presented with specific reference to its etiology, pathology, and current medical management. In addition, the course accentuates various examination strategies, organized clinical decision making and effective treatment techniques to improve activity and participation. Evidence based research will be used to support the efficacy of exercises presented and both indications and contraindications will be discussed. Clinicians are challenged to integrate and synthesize physiological and clinical principles in decision making and development of appropriate plans of care within various case study scenarios.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the learner will:

  • Identify the disease process including the definition, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and clinical course of congestive heart failure.
  • Understand the medical management for patients with acute and chronic CHF.
  • Review the effects and uses of various pharmacological interventions for patients with heart failure.
  • Select and provide rationale for utilization of various examination techniques for patients with heart failure in an effort to establish a PT/OT diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care.
  • Evaluate various objective data including but not limited to analyzing heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart and lung auscultation.
  • Develop, design, and describe the rationale and physiologic effects of various treatment techniques in managing patients with heart failure.
