Course Description

Therapists are faced with a unique challenge when exercising patients with heart failure. Several patients have multi system involvement, take multiple medications and are severely deconditioned. This course emphasizes key considerations applicable to the physical and occupational therapist in effectively managing patients with heart failure. The disease processes will be presented with specific reference to its etiology, pathology, and current medical management. In addition, the course accentuates various examination strategies, organized clinical decision making and effective treatment techniques to improve activity and participation. Evidence based research will be used to support the efficacy of exercises presented and both indications and contraindications will be discussed. Clinicians are challenged to integrate and synthesize physiological and clinical principles in decision making and development of appropriate plans of care within various case study scenarios.
