Overview & Rationale

Elevate Your Acute Cardiovascular Decision-Making

The role of healthcare professionals has expanded significantly over the last 20 years. As movement specialists in the 21st century, it is imperative that each clinician acquire adequate knowledge of their patient's cardiovascular system to maintain quality of patient care.

Emphasis on patient management now centers on providing an accurate evaluation, development of a problem list, assessment, efficient documentation, and development of effective treatment plans. A thorough evaluation ensures that interventions prescribed are safe and effective, and that respective goals to be accomplished are reasonable and attainable.

This 2-day course challenges clinicians to integrate and synthesize physiological and clinical principles in effectively caring for patients with cardiovascular disease—covering hypertension, atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, and dysrhythmias.

Designed for PT, PTA, OT, and COTA participants with an intermediate level of knowledge and experience in cardiovascular disease and patient management.

What You Will Master

Differential Diagnosis

Differentiate ischemic chest pain from non-ischemic chest pain, shortness of breath, and palpitations with confidence.

Systematic Rhythm Strip Analysis

Analyze atrial and ventricular rhythm strips systematically to gauge safety and plan acute mobilization.

Cardiovascular Pharmacology

Synthesize the clinical impact of CV medications on vitals, functional response, and treatment progression.

Educational Outcomes

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this 12-contact-hour seminar, the participating clinician will be able to:

  • Describe normal CV anatomy & physiology: Apply cardiovascular principles directly to physical & occupational therapy patient management.
  • Discuss targeted disease management: Formulate PT/OT strategies for patients diagnosed with hypertension, ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.
  • Differentially diagnose chest pain: Confidently distinguish ischemic chest pain from non-ischemic chest pain.
  • Analyze rhythm strips: Systematically interpret given atrial or ventricular EKG rhythm strips during clinical activity.
  • Review pharmacology: Evaluate the physiological effects and therapeutic uses of cardiovascular pharmacological interventions.
  • Select examination techniques: Provide clinical rationale for examination techniques to establish diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care.
  • Evaluate objective clinical data: Thoroughly assess heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate/pattern, heart & lung auscultation, posture, and RPE scores.
  • Design safe therapeutic plans: Develop and describe the rationale and physiologic effects of targeted treatment techniques in acute cardiovascular care.
